Proton therapy is useful for cancers that have not spread and for tumors that are located near organs or other structures that are sensitive to radiation.
Your multidisciplinary team at Orlando Health Cancer Institute will evaluate your case and determine if proton therapy is right for you, based upon tumor type, size, location and other factors. Treatment may include proton therapy alone or in combination with chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or other targeted therapies.
Some cancers that benefit from proton therapy include:
Brain Tumors – decreased volume of uninvolved brain receiving radiation
Breast (especially left side) – reduced radiation dose to the heart
Lung – less radiation dose to uninvolved lung and heart
Lymphoma (in the chest) – decreased radiation to lungs and heart
Pediatric cancers – reduced radiation to growing organs
Prostate – decreased radiation to the rectum, bladder and surrounding pelvis
Select head and neck, bone and muscle, and abdominal cancers
Spine tumors – decreased volume of uninvolved spine receiving radiation
