Mammography
Mammograms are one of the most important tools we have to diagnose breast cancer and breast abnormalities. These imaging tests detect changes in breast tissue, which can help doctors diagnose cancer at its earliest stages.
It’s important to discuss with your doctor your family history of cancer, any previous mammograms and when to start screening. You should also talk about the possible benefit of genetic risk assessment or testing with a genetic counselor. It’s crucial to also be familiar with your breasts and talk to your doctor about any breast changes you experience, including lumps, skin changes, nipple changes and discharge.
Breast lumps are sometimes found in the skin along or under the arm, or deep in the breast. While cancer cannot be diagnosed by touch, breast cancer lumps usually feel firm and have an irregular size. They may be painful or not.
We understand that you may be feeling stressed or uncertain about an upcoming mammogram. Rest assured that you’re not alone in feeling this way, and it’s normal to have questions and concerns about the exam.
